Speedmaster

The Speedmaster is a chronograph first: a crown with a pusher above and below it, a tachymeter scale on the bezel for converting elapsed time into a rate, and counters set into the main dial. Two very different executions of it sit in this collection. One is 44.25 mm and machined from black ceramic, so the case, bezel and dial are all the same dark material and the print has to do the work of separating them. The other is 42 mm in steel with a silver dial, a blue ceramic bezel and a medallion in one of the registers. Each page states which read sits where on its own dial.

Black dial straight on inside a black ceramic case, with tachymeter numerals around the bezel, two counters between three and nine o’clock, a date aperture low in the dial and a black strap below
  • Bezel A tachymeter scale converting elapsed seconds into units per hour, read against a fixed index rather than a turning rim.
  • Counters Two counters set into the dial with a date aperture on the ceramic reference; three registers on the anniversary reference, the nine o’clock one carrying a medallion.
  • Cases 44.25 mm black ceramic at 16.14 mm thick; or 42 mm steel on the anniversary reference.
  • What the pages state The visible layout, colours and printed scales from the photographs, plus the reference’s published data; the movement fitted and the strap supplied are inquiry items.

Design notes

What defines the Speedmaster

Colour carries different work in each execution

On the black ceramic watch, case, bezel and dial are all dark, so legibility comes from the print and the applied indexes rather than from contrast between the case and the dial. On the silver-dial anniversary reference the opposite is true: the dial is the light element, the bezel is a band of blue ceramic, and the markers and hands carry blue against the pale surface. Those two approaches photograph very differently, which is why each page describes the frame it is based on instead of a general impression of the line.

The tachymeter scale is a rate table

The numbers around the bezel are not a second time display. They convert the time taken for one known unit of distance into an average speed: sixty seconds for one unit corresponds to sixty units an hour, thirty seconds to 120, and the spacing gets wider as the numbers climb. Reading it is independent of whether the chronograph itself starts, stops and resets cleanly, and both are worth checking separately on a video of the actual watch.

These notes describe the design as it appears in the photographs on this site. Movement, water resistance, weight and material composition are not stated here, because those belong to the specific unit being offered and are confirmed in the conversation before anything is paid.
