Submersible

The Submersible is Panerai’s dive line, and it is recognisable from its case before its dial: a cushion-shaped case with a bridge of metal over the crown, a graduated bezel set around it and lugs that stand well clear so a thick strap passes underneath. The reference in this collection is the 47 mm Bronzo, whose bezel carries a brown ceramic insert and whose dial is brown with luminous dots at the hours, printed numerals between them, a date aperture at three o’clock and running seconds in a register at nine. The frames on the watch page show the watch straight on, the case turned at an angle with the crown bridge, the dial and bezel close up, and the back with the movement behind it.

  • Crown protection A bridge of case metal folds over the crown, which is why the crown sits inside the flank rather than standing proud of it.
  • Bezel A graduated rim around the crystal carrying a micro-sandblasted insert, with the first minutes marked in finer steps.
  • Dial Brown, with luminous dots at the hours and printed numerals between them, the date in an aperture at three and running seconds in a register at nine.
  • Strap shown A thick stitched strap that passes between the lugs and sits under the case, with the case back visible below it in the frames.

Design notes

What defines the Submersible

Two readings, two positions

A dive dial has to answer two questions while you are wearing it: what time is it, and how long has this been going. The Submersible keeps the two apart by placing the date in an aperture at three o’clock and the running seconds in a register at nine, leaving the rest of the dial to the hour markers and nothing else. That is a deliberate limit on print. The depth rating and the line lettering appear as small blocks of text above and below the centre rather than as scales, and there is no second display on the dial surface itself.

The strap is part of the case

On this shape the strap is not hung from lugs fitted to the outside of the case; it passes between them and tucks under the body, which is why the thickness of the leather matters more here than on a watch with an integrated bracelet. A thick strap lifts the case off the wrist and gives the whole watch a different presence from a thin one, and a strap that has been trimmed or is not cut for these lugs can pinch against the case. That is why the strap supplied is one of the questions the watch page puts to the seller rather than an assumption.

These notes describe the design as it appears in the photographs on this site. Movement, water resistance, weight and material composition are not stated here, because those belong to the specific unit being offered and are confirmed in the conversation before anything is paid.
