Explorer

The Explorer is the plainest line in this collection: one dial, one display, no date and no rotating bezel. It appears here as a single 40 mm silver-tone configuration with a black dial and a smooth bezel. Dimensions, the fitted movement and any rating of an individual watch are confirmed in the conversation.

Design notes

What defines the Explorer

What a dial looks like when it carries one scale

Three numerals and nine batons do the work of twelve identical markers. The numerals break the ring into quarters, so the dial can be read by quadrant — a glance at which quarter the hand is in is often enough — while the batons fill the intervals in between and hold the same alignment as the markers on the sports references. With no date aperture the ring runs unbroken, and with no printed scale on the bezel there is nothing competing with it. The result is a dial whose balance is easier to judge in a photograph than most: a marker sitting off the track or a numeral that is not level shows up immediately.

Where the Explorer sits in this collection

Compared with the Submariner, there is no rotating bezel and nothing to time with it. Compared with the Daytona, there are no registers and no rate scale. Compared with the Datejust, there is no calendar and no magnifying lens. What remains is the display itself, which is the point of the design: one scale, one set of hands and one control on the case. Model reference and case size are listed on the watch page, while the measured dimensions, the fitted movement and the rating of a particular watch are asked for in writing; availability, price and shipping are confirmed in the WhatsApp conversation.

These notes describe the design as it appears in the photographs on this site. Movement, water resistance, weight and material composition are not stated here, because those belong to the specific unit being offered and are confirmed in the conversation before anything is paid.
