What defines the Code 11.59

A smoked dial reads differently in every frame

A dial finished with a gradient is not one colour: the lacquer is thinnest or brightest in the middle and deepest at the rim, so a photograph taken with the light straight on and one taken with the light to the side will disagree about what colour the watch is. That is a property of the finish rather than a difference between two watches. When you are judging a smoked dial, ask for a frame in soft daylight with the watch square to the camera and another at an angle, because the first shows the gradient and the second shows how the counters and markers separate from it.

Where the octagon went

The eight sides on this case are not on the bezel, which is round, but on the middle section between the bezel and the back. From the front the watch reads as a circle; from the side, the flank steps in twice and the middle of the case carries the flat faces. That is why the case-flank frame on the watch page matters more than it would on a watch with a screw-set octagonal bezel: it is the only view in which the geometry that defines the collection is visible at all.
