Series

RM 035 Rafael Nadal

The RM 035 is built around its case rather than around a dial: a tonneau outline made of a bezel ring, a case middle and a back, held together by splined screws that stay visible, with the strap bolted to the case between the lugs instead of hung from them. Under the crystal there is no dial plate — the movement itself is the dial, and the printed elements that identify the watch sit on its bridges and plates. The reference in this collection is the RM 035 Rafael Nadal Americas form shown with a matte black case ring and a white strap, and the frames on the watch page show the watch upright, turned to three-quarter, the gear train close up and the clasp open.

Tonneau case held upright in a black glove with a matte black bezel held by splined screws, the skeletonised movement visible under the crystal and a white strap below the case
  • Case Tonneau outline of three screwed-together parts, with the screw heads left visible around the bezel and no lugs to break the line.
  • Dial No dial plate: the gear train, bridges and plates of the movement are what the crystal covers, with printed batons around the outer ring for the hours.
  • Strap shown A white strap with a moulded pattern, bolted to the case, marked with the brand name on both the strap and the folding clasp.
  • Proportions Published at 48 mm by 39.7 mm, a shape that measures differently on the wrist from the way a round case of the same width does.

Design notes

What defines the RM 035

When the movement is the dial, identification moves with it

On a conventional watch the dial carries the brand, the model name and often the reference, so a photograph of the face identifies the watch. Take the dial plate away and that information moves onto the movement: it is the bridges and the plates that carry the printing, which is why the useful identifying frames for this watch are the close-ups rather than the straight-on view. It also means that two examples of the same model can differ in what they show under the crystal without either being wrong, since the visible parts are the movement rather than a printed surface.

Screws instead of lugs change the fit

A case held together by screws and a strap bolted to its back sits on the wrist differently from a conventional watch: there is no spring bar to bend, the strap cannot rotate away from the case, and the whole assembly is stiffer where it crosses the wrist. That stiffness is the point — it is what keeps a heavy case from sliding — but it also means the strap length has to be right, because there is less give in the fitting. Strap length, the buckle and any spare strap are therefore questions about the individual watch rather than details that can be read from a photograph.

These notes describe the design as it appears in the photographs on this site. Movement, water resistance, weight and material composition are not stated here, because those belong to the specific unit being offered and are confirmed in the conversation before anything is paid.
