Golden Ellipse

The Golden Ellipse is the quietest watch in this catalogue: an elliptical case whose proportions follow the golden section, a dial carrying nothing but the maker’s name in two lines and a set of slim applied baton markers, and two hands with no seconds hand and no date. The reference in this collection is the white gold watch with a sunburst olive green dial on an 18-carat gold plate and a green calfskin strap, with a solid back rather than a display back, and 5.9 mm from the outside of the glass to the back of the case. The frames on the watch page show the dial straight on, the case at three-quarters on its strap, the dial close up and the back of the case.

  • Case An ellipse derived from the golden section — 34.5 mm by 39.5 mm, 5.9 mm thick, entirely polished, with a solid back.
  • Dial Sunburst olive green on an 18-carat gold plate, with slim applied baton markers and thin hands; no date and no seconds hand.
  • Proportion The case is nearly as flat as a sheet of the same dimensions, which is what makes the strap sit flush against it with no visible gap.
  • Strap shown Green calfskin with pale stitching, tapering into the case without a break in the line of the watch.

Design notes

What defines the Golden Ellipse

Nothing moves except the time

With no date aperture and no seconds hand, this dial has only two moving elements on it. That is the whole design argument: the surface can be finished rather than annotated, so the sunburst rays are the feature you look at instead of the background behind three windows. It also changes what a photograph has to prove. There is no complication to see working, so the frames that matter are about finish — whether the rays run evenly, whether the markers catch light cleanly, and whether the dial has been touched.

A flat case changes the strap

Because the case is 5.9 mm from the glass to the back, the strap leaves the case at almost the same height as the wrist, and on this model it is cut to meet the case exactly. That is why the frame showing the watch at an angle is worth looking at closely: any gap, fold or pinch between the leather and the metal shows up there and nowhere else. The strap supplied, its length and the buckle are therefore questions about the individual watch rather than details that follow from the reference number.

These notes describe the design as it appears in the photographs on this site. Movement, water resistance, weight and material composition are not stated here, because those belong to the specific unit being offered and are confirmed in the conversation before anything is paid.
