Santos Galbée

The Santos Galbée is the Santos case with a curve put into it: square when seen from above, with the flanks bowing outward between the lugs and the outline softening as the watch turns. The bezel is a separate band held by eight screws, and the bracelet’s rows are built the same way, so the two rows of screw heads run down the watch in a single line. The reference in this collection is the two-tone version shown on a pale silvered dial with Roman numerals, black print and blue hands, with the date in a small aperture at three o’clock. The frames on the watch page show the case straight on, the angled flank with the crown, the dial close up and the clasp.

Square case straight on with a gold-toned bezel held by eight visible screws, a pale silvered dial with black Roman numerals and blue hands, and a bracelet of pale links with gold-toned screw heads
  • Case Square in plan with flanks that bow outward between the lugs; the crown is fluted and set with a stone cabochon.
  • Bezel A separate band, slightly proud of the case, held by eight screws with their heads left visible at the rim.
  • Dial Pale silvered surface with black Roman numerals inside a printed minute track, blue hands and a small date aperture at three o’clock.
  • Bracelet Rows of pale links with gold-toned screw heads, closing on a folding clasp — the arrangement shown in the frames.

Design notes

What defines the Santos Galbée

What the curve actually changes

The bow in the flanks is not decoration: it is what lets a square case sit on a round wrist without the corners standing away, and it is the reason the lugs can be short while still holding the bracelet. It also changes how the watch reads in photographs. Straight on, the case looks square and the bezel looks flat; turned to three-quarters, the flank catches a line of light along its length and the squareness mostly disappears. Both frames are useful, and neither one on its own describes the watch.

Two-tone here means a specific arrangement

On a two-tone watch the colour can sit in the bezel only, in the centre links of the bracelet, or in both, and the three readings look quite different on the wrist. This reference is a declared two-tone piece, which is why the metal of each part is worth confirming rather than assuming: the case, the bezel band, the screws, the links and the clasp each have their own answer, and a photograph can show the tone but not the composition. The watch page keeps the metal of the piece in the inquiry list for that reason.

These notes describe the design as it appears in the photographs on this site. Movement, water resistance, weight and material composition are not stated here, because those belong to the specific unit being offered and are confirmed in the conversation before anything is paid.
