Aquanaut

The Aquanaut is the sports watch in this catalogue with a pattern rather than a texture: a raised grid embossed across the dial and repeated on the strap, so the watch reads as one continuous surface from the face out to the wrist. The case around it is a round dial in an octagonal bezel with satin-finished flats and polished flanks, and the markers are applied numerals with luminous coating rather than printed figures. The reference in this collection is the 42.2 mm white gold watch with a khaki green dial and a green strap, carrying a date aperture at three o’clock. The frames on the watch page show the dial straight on, the watch at three-quarters, the crown and strap close up and the case in profile.

Khaki green dial straight on with an embossed grid pattern, applied Arabic numerals and baton markers, the date window at three and a green patterned strap below the white-metal case
  • Bezel An octagon with vertically satin-finished flats and polished flanks, unmarked, so the outline changes as light moves across it.
  • Dial Embossed with a raised grid, carrying applied Arabic numerals and baton markers with a luminous coating; the date sits in an aperture at three o’clock.
  • Strap shown A green strap printed with the same grid as the dial, fitted to the case so the pattern continues from dial to wrist.
  • Size 42.2 mm across — the largest case in this line — which the printed proportions and the case thickness together decide how it wears.

Design notes

What defines the Aquanaut

One pattern, two materials

The embossed grid on this watch does not stop at the dial: the strap is patterned the same way, which is why the watch looks continuous rather than like a case with a strap attached. The effect only becomes obvious at an angle, where the raised lines on the dial and the raised lines on the strap catch light in the same direction. That is also why changing the strap changes the watch: a plain strap interrupts the pattern the design depends on, and a patterned one continues it.

An octagonal bezel on a round dial

The dial is round, the bezel is not. Because the bezel’s flats are satin-finished and its flanks are polished, the same surface reads bright along the flats and dark along the flanks as the watch moves. From straight on it is easy to mistake the case for a plain round one; from three-quarters the geometry becomes obvious. When you are judging a photograph of this model, the angled frame is therefore the one that tells you which case you are looking at.

These notes describe the design as it appears in the photographs on this site. Movement, water resistance, weight and material composition are not stated here, because those belong to the specific unit being offered and are confirmed in the conversation before anything is paid.
