About this watch

Design and details

The no-date layout and its marker geometry

The no-date Submariner uses a triangle at twelve, rectangular markers at three, six and nine, and round markers at the other hour positions. That combination helps distinguish orientation without giving every marker a different design. On the black dial, the light marker centres and surrounding metal-tone borders create contrast with the background.

Removing the date aperture leaves a full marker at three o’clock and removes the magnifying lens associated with a date display. The dial can therefore be read as a balanced arrangement around the central hands. The outer minute track adds finer divisions between the hour positions. This configuration is especially recognisable for what it leaves out: no calendar window and no chronograph subdials competing for space.

Hands, minute track and visual legibility

The hour hand has a broad, segmented circular motif near its tip, while the minute hand is longer and narrower. A slender central seconds hand completes the display. Their different shapes serve an important reading function: the hour and minute hands remain distinguishable even when their positions are close together.

The photographed dial combines large hour markers with a fine outer track. The larger elements provide orientation, while the minute hand points toward the smaller divisions for a more precise reading. The light-filled areas in the hands and markers are visible in the images, but brightness in daylight is a different property from performance in darkness. Night-time behaviour is assessed with a separate low-light demonstration rather than inferred from a bright product photograph.

The 60-minute bezel and elapsed-time reading

The black bezel carries a triangle at its starting point and a scale running through a full 60-minute cycle. The opening fifteen-minute portion uses closely spaced individual divisions; later positions are marked more sparsely, with prominent numerals at ten-minute intervals. The scalloped outer edge adds a distinct outline around the case and offers a surface intended for gripping.

On a functioning timing bezel, the starting marker is aligned with the minute hand. As the hand advances, its position against the bezel gives elapsed minutes. If it has moved twenty divisions beyond that marker, twenty minutes have passed. This is a direct elapsed-time reading, unlike a tachymeter, which converts elapsed time over a known distance into an average rate.

The 41 mm model and case proportions

The 124060 model diameter is 41 mm. A broad black bezel surrounds the dial, so the apparent size comes from the whole case-and-bezel composition rather than the dial opening alone. The crown sits on the right-hand side between protective shoulders, and the bracelet meets the case through shaped end links.

For fit, consider the distance from the top lug to the bottom lug, the case height and how the first links articulate. Two watches with the same diameter can sit differently because these other dimensions differ. A wrist photograph is most useful when the wrist size is known and the camera is held at a normal viewing distance. Close wide-angle photographs can exaggerate how large the watch appears.

Three-link bracelet and black-and-silver balance

The three-link bracelet has broad centre links and a straightforward geometric structure. In this configuration, the silver-tone bracelet and case surround a black dial and bezel, producing a continuous colour scheme. The bracelet’s broad link pattern complements the large hour markers and avoids adding another fine decorative pattern around the wrist.

When choosing a fit, bracelet length, removable links and clasp adjustment are practical considerations. The way the end links meet the case also affects the transition from the rigid watch head to the flexible bracelet. These details are best viewed from both above and from the side. A full-watch image establishes the overall proportions, while a close-up shows the relationship between the case edge, lugs and first links.

No-date Submariner or another design?

This configuration suits a preference for a clear time display and a consistent black-and-silver palette. Compared with a date-equipped design, it gives up the calendar aperture in exchange for an uninterrupted marker arrangement. Compared with the Daytona, it replaces multiple smaller displays and pushers with a larger, simpler dial and a minute-graduated bezel.

The Datejust offers a different direction through Roman numerals, a date magnifier and a fluted bezel. Choosing between them is partly a question of which information you want to see and partly one of surface finish and visual detail. For the no-date configuration shown here, use reference 124060-0001 in your inquiry and include your destination country and bracelet-sizing needs. Water-use suitability must be assessed from the specific watch’s tested rating, not the depth text printed on its dial.

Questions

Frequently asked about this reference

What changes when the date is removed?
The dial has a full marker at three o’clock and no date aperture or magnifying lens. This produces a balanced hour-marker layout and removes the calendar information from the display.
What do the numbers around the bezel mean?
They are minute graduations. A timing bezel relates the minute hand to a chosen starting position so elapsed minutes can be read without changing the time on the watch.
Why are the first fifteen minutes marked more closely?
Individual divisions allow shorter intervals to be read more precisely in that part of the scale. The remaining scale uses fewer printed marks to keep the bezel readable.
Will 41 mm tell me whether it fits my wrist?
It is a starting point. Lug-to-lug length, thickness, bracelet articulation and adjustment range also influence fit. Consider those dimensions together rather than selecting solely by case diameter.
Does the dial depth marking establish swimming suitability?
No. A printed depth marking is not a pressure-test result for an individual watch. Water-use suitability depends on the tested rating and condition of that specific unit.
How does it differ from the Daytona?
The no-date Submariner has a central time display and a 60-minute bezel scale. The Daytona has three subdials, separate chronograph pushers and a tachymeter scale intended for reading a rate.
